Martin Ross, LL.B., LL.M.

Martin Ross, LL.B.My formative business experience, digging in construction site footings, began after I prematurely departed high school in the late spring of 1969. Over the next fifteen years I worked for a prominent Toronto residential/commercial/office property developer and made my way from labourer, to construction supervisor, construction manager, and then property manager. In the midst of this I also established and operated landscape/snow removal and renovation businesses.

In 1984 at the age of 34 I decided it was time for a career change and entered Osgoode Hall Law School. On graduation I joined Strathy, Archibald & Seagram a venerable banking and commercial law firm of about 50 lawyers. As Strathy, Archibald & Seagram morphed into Gowling Strathy & Henderson LLP and finally into Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP - an international law firm with over 700 lawyers - I moved from associate to partner eventually co-managing the firm's highly profitable mortgage enforcement department of 7 lawyers and 25 clerks.

In 2001 I made the decision to leave Gowlings in favour of the greater flexibility of managing my own practice and focusing on a variety of investments and private business interests. My initial intention was to restrict my legal practice to serving a few select clients as independent general counsel and strategic advisor. My business interests included an investment in a franchised retail chain, commercial and residential property management, a construction equipment vendor, and a business in the United Kingdom which fills and sells bottled water, water coolers, and for a short time, vodka. However, my legal practice grew to demand much of my time and attention and led me to form Ross · Rumbell with one of my closest friends, Glenn Rumbell, who I met within a few days of starting classes at Osgoode Hall Law School. In addition to practicing law I continue to maintain private business interests including the business in the U.K., the equipment vendor and several angel investments in start-ups.

From September 2009 through June 2011 I attended Osgoode Hall Law School part time to earn a Masters of Law with a concentration in intellectual property. I am married (to a lawyer/R&B and jazz singer) and have 4 bright and accomplished children. Apart from business and law my interests include running, yoga and cycling.
